Project Description
The Lewes Church of Christ
What began as a handful of people meeting in a small living room in 1982, steadily flourished into a 650 strong community today. The Lewes Church of Christ recruited Davis Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), to expand their facility in Milton, Delaware to accommodate the rising number of members.
Physical spatial requirements were proposed for the 23,500 SF worship and education facility, which houses the worship/music/drama, education, outdoor and support functions of the church. The approach to the site design recognized that the religious experience does not begin at the entry doors to the church, but rather the moment a member of the congregation steps foot on the site. Theological opportunities link the church with an on-site amphitheater, and water was incorporated for reflection, symbolism, and environmental reasons.
Site and building design drawings were prepared along with 3D renderings to communicate the concept to the congregation. In-house services were provided to develop the design and technical documents to build out the 10,000 SF phase 1A sanctuary, parking, and stormwater pond.
Initially designed to accommodate 600 worshippers, the structure was put in place during this phase of construction to easily facilitate future balcony seating for an additional 400 worshippers.
