Project Description

Stephen Decatur Tennis Courts

Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), assisted the Town of Berlin in rehabilitating four existing dilapidated tennis courts, located at the Stephen Decatur Park, in order to meet the United States Tennis Association (USTA) requirements.

Work included milling and overlaying the existing tennis court surface, painting, striping, installation of the tennis court lighting, nets, benches, bike rack, fencing, and miscellaneous stormwater management site work in accordance to the plans. The final result provided the town with four USTA approved tennis courts for Stephen Decatur Park visitors to use during the daytime or evenings.

During construction it was realized that the subgrade under two of the courts was unstable and overlaying as designed would likely result in premature failing of the pavement system. DBF worked with the town and contractor to evaluate several options and negotiate a fair price with the contractor to make repairs that provided the Town with a higher quality finished product and added long-term value.
