Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF) designed this unique custom home outside Salisbury, Maryland for a husband, wife, and their two school-aged children. The property is located in a beautiful semi-rural area of Wicomico County in a small subdivision designed to accommodate a series of “farmettes”. This particular site is located off the adjoining street with access to the home along a tree-lined decorative stone lane.

The home has a distinctive country look in keeping with the agrarian vernacular found in the surrounding region. Board-and-batten siding is prevalent throughout and visually supported by a stone base and accents. Metal roofing accentuates low sloped porch roofs and window canopies; and, while the home is accentuated with a variety of additive forms, including a three-car garage and gabled roof projections, the house reveals itself at the end of the tree-lined drive strongly symmetrical. These elements, along with a conscious effort to keep the scale of the two-story home minimal, all reflect a “comfortable and welcoming” presence – typical in the area and valued by the home’s owners.

Overall, the house encompasses about 4,200 SF of living space with a future “man-cave” anticipated over the garage. The first floor contains a center hall foyer flanked on one side by an open stair leading to an overlooking second-floor balcony and the other side by a study. Beyond the foyer is an open family room/dining area, itself flanked by a fireplace at one end and a kitchen/breakfast nook at the other. The kitchen was designed for an excellent cook who oftentimes conducts demonstrations and tastings for several guests. The open plan is ideal to accommodate such events, while still maintaining a cozy, comfortable setting for the family.

With the master bedroom suite situated on the first floor, the children’s bedrooms and guest room occupy the second. Each bedroom contains its own walk-in closet and bath, and each offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
