Sandhill Fields Grand Opening
With the ever-growing communities in Sussex County, and the recent explosion of youth athletics, a small group of individuals and business owners from the county saw a need to create a recreational center conveniently and centrally located in Georgetown, Delaware. The complex is to serve as a community facility to host games and tournaments for athletic clubs from all around the Mid-Atlantic region.
The project that was once conceived from a mere desire to have a recreational area, where people of all ages can come together to exercise, practice, socialize, play games and compete in tournaments has finally come to a reality as the new sports complex officially opens.
The support of this project comes greatly in part from the Sussex Sports Foundation that has raised more than $4.5 million from the private sector as well as an additional $1.5 million from other government entities. It has been the mission of the foundation to build, operate and maintain a first-class multi-sports center in the middle of Sussex County for all the citizens of the area to enjoy.
“Sandhill Fields is more than just a sports complex, it is a place where friends and family can come together to pursue sports and outdoor activities as a community that will benefit the citizens of Sussex County for years to come,” said DBF Principal, Zac Crouch, P.E.
Davis, Bowen & Friedel Inc. provided master planning, architecture, civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture services for this project.
This new 56-acre sports complex encompasses eight regulation-sized soccer/lacrosse Bermuda grass fields, six pickleball courts, 3.5 miles of walking and 3.1 miles of cross-country trails, playground equipment, restroom facilities, picnic pavilions, food truck area, and ample parking for 350 cars.
