Athletic stadium recognized for meeting green practice standards.

Adding to the growing list of sustainable design projects at Salisbury University, the four-story football stadium within the university’s athletic complex has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is a globally recognized green building certification program which assesses the design, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities.

Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), provided landscape architecture, civil engineering and surveying services for the site, earning LEED points for water-efficient landscaping and stormwater design-quantity control, among others. DBF, in collaboration with architects Grieves, Worrall, Wright & O’Hatnick Inc. (GWWO) and contracting by Whiting Turner Co., assisted in laying the foundation for a sustainable future.

Elements of the site were planned with LEED certification in mind including, bioretention areas, submerged gravel wetland, landscape infiltration, bike racks, native plants for landscaping, reduced water usage, sidewalks to promote pedestrian use and zero stormwater discharge at the site.

The over-all athletic complex was completed in 2018 and included the renovation of the football and lacrosse stadium, the men and women’s soccer fields and tennis fields, along with the construction of new baseball, softball, intramural and maintenance facilities. DBF is currently assisting Salisbury University with the completion of a pedestrian pathway project, as well as design work for the 3D Arts Center renovation on the east campus.
